The History of “Agateware” and Contemporary Examples

The stone “Agate” simply is a semi-gem stone including a very high degree of silica. This stone has an irregular structure with many colours and various layers of colours. Along with the history, this stone had widely been used to make rings, seals, buttons and ornaments. Even today, it is mostly used to make jewelery and ornaments. Ceramic pots, which emerged from necessity, developed and increased in variety by admiration to the nature. Sometimes, metal pots were imitated sometimes sea shells and natural stones. By doing this, admiration of nature was betrayed.

One of the ceramic techniques which arose from copying the nature is the ceramics which are the imitation of agate stone and are known as “agateware” In this study, the history of “agateware” ceramics will be explained with ancient and contemporary examples.
